The search is over!

I've been looking for them for years and this morning, I finally put together the right combination of words and found the hinges I need for my kitchen cabinets. What's the big deal, you might ask?  They're hinges.  You go to the hardware store and buy new ones, drill some holes, and you have hinges. Oh, not so, though... not so. Google this term:  Overlay knife hinge and look at the photos of these things.  They're like no hinges I've ever seen and I found them today.  Now, the next trick is coming up with the $80 I need to order replacements for them. In the great kitchen remodel that's about to take place at my house, new hinges are a priority because I'm going to change the cabinet pulls to brushed nickel and the ones I have are brass.  Unfortunately, because of the design of the cabinets, going with a more modern, european hinge won't work.  I have to have these for the cheap doors I have. $80 is cheaper than buying new cabinets.   ...

God in the details

I know I don't write like I used to and today isn't going to be an exception.  I will tell you about my day though, because it's just kind of typical for a day for me. I woke up at eight with having my phone ring.  It was the immigrant letting me know she's still alive.  She was potting plants all night last night, but not here.  That's probably a good thing because I ain't havin' that mess all over this house. I got out of bed about a half-hour later.  Dogs had to go, so I stumbled out of bed, figuring that I needed to start my day.  After taking care of the muttleys, it was time to turn my attention to the house.  One of the cats got sick, so I had to clean that up.  Having animals entails chores around here, like sweeping and stuff, so I got that done.  After that, it was time to update the menofvisionutah.org website (shameless plug).  When that was done, sometime after about nine-thirty, it was time to head to my friend's house ...

A little class goes a long way

I took a stewardship class last fall.  It's kind of changed my way of thinking about things and how I care for and about them.  It's not news.  I've talked about it before.  The changes in me though really kind of surprise me. Here's what's new around here: I was getting a haircut on Tuesday and I noticed the gal that cut it had parted it from right to left.  I liked the look a lot more than what I'd been doing with it.  Believe it or not, I do brush it daily, but it gets messed up.  It doesn't wanna go where I'm wanting it to go.  It goes all over the place, but for some reason I decided this look was one that I liked, so to keep it, I bought some hair pomade (yup, I'm a Dapper Dan man) for the first time in my life.  No more unruly muppet look. I just gotta face the fact that long hair is not flattering on me and that 80's part it in the middle and feather it back look just isn't coming back...and for good reason. I had a brief visi...

Smelling like airplane!

One of my co-workers likes to try and embarrass me.  I work around a bunch of guys and they're guys and they tell stories.  If I can't walk away, I often just look down and shake my head in disapproval.  He knows I'm a man of faith.  He thinks it funny when I do this and today he said something about me having to go say "ten hail Mary's" because I heard the story he told. I told him this..."...if you only knew.  But I'm so glad you don't." He asked me what I meant by that.  I told him that I had a past and left it at that.  He said this to me:  "at least you have a future...most of the rest of us don't."  I told him I could tell him how to fix that, but he already knows.  At least he's reading the Bible, or was the last time he was on the shift. There is a young man that works on the same docks I do.  He's a sheet metal guy and he belongs to the Guard unit I retired from.  He's brand new there.  I'm infamou...

How I fixed the ice maker

Sometimes fixing things involves a bit of detective work in determining what's broken. My ice machine quit making ice.  Our ice maker for the fridge ceased to be a functional device years ago but I have a countertop model that works just nicely.  Or worked.  With some help from my old friend, the interweb, and some careful inspection, I was able to figure out what was wrong. When it quit making ice, it would flash lights that meant the ice shovel was stuck.  It didn't look stuck to me, but what it was, was broken.  I didn't understand this until I started cleaning out the ice machine and found this little piece of plastic.  I then noticed it was one of two tabs that used to hold said ice shovel at a 45 degree angle.  (In addition to no cents symbol on my computer, there is no degree symbol either)  Apparently the unit does not function when the ice scoop just dangles down. So then there's the whole getting parts for the thing process and it ...
