When the walls come tumbling down
At the outset, let me say that I don't write this thing to blow my own horn. For a long time, I wrote it just to share the amazing things God does in my life, and brother, what a seven year journey that has been. And then the things that God is doing in my life became so very intimate, so very even hard-to-believe that I didn't feel it right to share. And then I bought a smartphone and decided to pay that bill and my utilities vs. internet every month and I kinda quit writing at all.
So, I'm back to writing because I needed some internets to do my taxes. And there's a lot to write about if you're an American who loves his/her country and you've been watching the debacle in Washington, D.C. this week.
Debacle is being generous.
So, we're gonna build a wall and Mexico is gonna pay us for it. Later. Maybe. So, let's take a quick history lesson about walls, my dear friends, and the sheer stupidity of them.
Our first lesson on walls comes from the book of Joshua in the Bible. We learn how effective that wall was in Joshua Chapter six. The wall couldn't stand up to the power of Almighty God.
Fast forward to the book of Daniel. Cyrus conquers the Babylonians by diverting the river that ran through their wall, and marched in the stream bed into the city, thereby circumventing their walls. There was a party going on that night, and Daniel was summoned to read "the writing on the wall." The story of how the city was conquered is a matter of recorded world history.
How'd that wall work out for them?
The great wall of China is still there. You can visit it. How's that working for keeping people out in the age of jet travel?
And when we were kids, I remember an American President standing at the Berlin wall and shouting to Mr. Gorbachev to "tear down this wall". There was a wall dividing east and west, and yes it stopped most people, for a while, from crossing it, but some got creative. That wall didn't work, and neither will ours.
There were others: The Maginot line, that barrier that was supposed to stop any invasion into France....well, it didn't. Slowed it down a bit, maybe, but it didn't stop an invasion and the temporary defeat of the French army. As an aside, maybe y'all ought to do some research into 1930's Germany and the policies of the United States at the time.
I have been to many cities in Europe where the remnants of walls exist. Pisa and Aachen come to mind. Walls that in some form or another are still there, but no longer functioning. The cities have grown out of them, or what remains are only partial remnants of walls that used to exist, and don't. Times change.
A short post, but one which I hope provokes thought.
Walls don't work. Much like locks, they keep honest people honest. A wall isn't going to work, when we share two common oceans with Mexico, as well as a Southern border. All we do is force those who will try and we refuse to allow entry to, into boats, and we all know what a humanitarian nightmare that is.
Just sayin'.....
