Detours, delays, plagues, and blessings
From today's post title, you can imagine that there has been a plethora of activity in my life. Where to start, though?
How about here?
We got hit with a plague of bugs. I should say, I got hit with a plague of bugs. Some of them just went after me. We had wee beasties of all sorts. No more though. It cost me a bit of money, and in the process I got rid of all of my furniture.
ALL of it.
I'm down to a folding chair and an air mattress for a bed for now.
But when I got hit with the plague of bugs, I knew who to call. I didn't need to call around. I met a "bug guy" through my friend, Jim Godfrey. Jim has gone on to his reward, but because I met Jim at church and because we became friends, I met an exterminator. He and his family kind of adopted Jim during the last year or so of his life, and that's how I knew who to call when I had bug trouble. I guess things like this are just part of being a homeowner and now I'm on a bug maintenance plan.
I got to be a blessing to this guy. He's been a blessing to me. We both win. Just another of a zillion reasons I'm thankful I have a church family.
My friend's baby was born on Friday. I got to see her and share a very special moment with his family in the hospital. That I did was kind of another story, which I'd like to tell.
My son and I started out for Lost Creek reservoir on Friday. We met at the WalMart in South Ogden and drove to the lake. As we started to cross the dam, my son realized he'd left his keys in his car. So we drove back to the WalMart and sure enough, he'd left them in the ignition, with the car unlocked. We were blessed to have the car still there and unlocked. So instead of fishing, we went to breakfast. Then I came home and got the rest of what I needed to get done so the bug guy could have free roam of the house.
I had time to have lunch with a friend. It was just a quick lunch, but I enjoyed it. Then, there was time to go see the baby, which is how I was at the hospital at the right time to share a special moment with my friends.
God is always good to me.
We went fishing yesterday instead. We had a blast and stayed an hour longer than planned. But boy, did we have fun. And we managed to catch fish, too.
The kid out-fished me again. I'm happy about that.
So, back to the empty house. It's bad, but it's a blessing, too. I need to re-paint my bedroom. It's going to be the same color, but I had some spots I touched up and the touch-up didn't match the paint. Now it's going to get a fresh coat. I have to paint the new baseboards I put in with the new floor, too. No furniture to move, so it's gonna be easy.
I noticed, too, that while I'm a clean person, my house could use a deep cleaning. It's gonna get it. When that's done, the main bathroom is going to get a fresh coat of paint. Kids can be rough on things, so it needs it.
Those things will get the attention they need in the coming weeks. New carpet for the two little bedrooms is also on the list. RC Willey is having a sale. Before I carpet, I will paint the now-finally-empty bedroom. It needs it badly.
As I mentioned before, my washing machine gave up. The dryer still works, which is a blessing in itself. But the linoleum in the laundry room is quite damaged as a result of the washing machine giving up before. So new flooring in that room will become a priority in the next couple of weeks.
Several months ago, I started a prayer challenge and in it I circled a promise I believe God made to me. I asked Him to restore to me the years the locusts ate. I did this because I sincerely believed it was what I was supposed to pray for. It just never occurred to me at that time that the locusts weren't done eating. I think they are now. So in that, with everything gone, it's a good time to start fresh. Broken stuff is finally gone. There's nothing left but a few plastic bags of things I wanted to keep,
clothes and housewares. The stuff in the garage is still there, too.
Sometimes, because bad things happen, God can do good things at the end of them. My bug guy and I get to be a blessing to each other. The house and yard will be better without the insects. The house gets deep cleaned. It's completely de-cluttered. The folks downstairs weren't impacted by the bugs as much as I was, which is a blessing to them. And whatever I had from the past is pretty much gone. The stuff in the bags is mostly Christmas stuff and military stuff.
It seems my life has been a series of delays, detours, and plagues as of late. I've had the plague of mold, the plague of flies, and then the plague of wee beasties. All of those are over and now the process of starting over begins in earnest. I'm excited to start over.
I mean that. I'm excited for whatever lies next.
