Fall

The leaves on the scrub oak are turning quickly these days into various hues of gold, brown, and red.  Quickly fading are the dark greens of summer.  The nights are colder, the days shorter.  Fall is in the air.

It won't be long before the last tomatoes will be picked.  The cornstalks will be tied together and placed in the front yard for decoration.  It will be time to put away the regular china and pull out the fall china.  The first frost is not far away now.  With it the last colors of summer will go as the flowers that remain die from the cold.  Their remnants will be removed, added to the compost pile, that they may become nourishment for their replacements next spring.

I love the fall, the colors, the way the air smells.  One of the things I miss most about hunting trips is the smell of the quakies this time of year.

Fall reminds me of listening to World Series games around a campfire during the deer hunt on a cloudless, starry night.  Those are memories I cherish and I miss those times together with my friends.

Fall brings Johnathan apples.  There's nothing better than a crisp Johnathan but they're getting harder and harder to find these days.  I guess they're not as popular as they used to be but they're absolutely my favorite.  Tomorrow, I'm going on a quest to see if I can find some.  I might even treat myself to some mellowcreme pumpkins.  I never thought I'd actually be trying to put on a few pounds.

The garden is just about finished.  Our apples should be ready for picking and apple butter is on the agenda for the weekend.  So is a football game.  I'm counting quarters so I can go to the homecoming game on Saturday.

This week is Homecoming at Weber State.  In the evenings on the hillside behind my home during homecoming, there is the outline of the "W" lit up for the week.  Another sure sign that fall is here.  Football is in full swing, baseball is just about winding down. It'll be time soon for the baseball playoffs, the fall classic, the World Series.

There are so many good things about this time of year.

Just a note:  I'm going to allow comments on my blog again.  Hopefully we can all behave this time around.
