a little closer to home
The wondermutt got loose this morning and so did my tongue. I raised my voice about it out of frustration, not anger and my houseguest gave me what I gave. I deserved it and had to apologize after searching for the dog for about ten minutes. I came home to get some shoes and a leash in the off chance I found him and when I yelled, the neighbor told me he was still on the circle. I retrieved him three doors down from mine. At least he's staying a little closer to home and not roaming the campus. Maybe he's finally figured out he doesn't like doggie jail.
I had a productive weekend. As I write this, I'm so full I could bust after eating homemade bread with homemade jam. The jam wasn't made today, but six pints of apple butter were. There is chili sauce on the stove right now. It's made with more store bought tomatoes than garden tomatoes this year. The garden didn't do well this year and with the cooler temps all of a sudden, the plants are just trying to finish up what's already on them. There will be few tomatoes to share and no green beans. We just don't have any this year. Not even for us to carry into the winter. We had enough for two meals. That's all.
There are pears and peaches, too. I bottled seven quarts of our peaches and fourteen quarts of peaches I bought from Pettingill's. The apples were bought there too. My neighbor cut his tree way back and there aren't any apples this year to make apple butter with. I enjoy Jonathan apples and they had half-bushels of them for an affordable price. A half-bushel of apples will make about seven pints of apple butter. I ate some, shared some, and left some for fruit salad and an apple pie. That's it for the apples.
But boy were they good.
We're well blessed for the winter though. We have stuff left from last year that we bottled. It's still good so we'll be eating it more often. I've challenged Miss June to use one jar of something a week until we make a dent in what we have. I've used barbeque sauce and two kinds of jams this week. I'm doing my part. I'm still swapping empty jars for full jars, too. If you have one of my jars and you return it empty, I will give you a full jar of something else. We still have enough of some things to share. The raspberry jam has been crossed off that list and sadly, so is apple butter. I have one to share with someone who gets it regardless of whether or not he returns the jars.
I'd taken some apricot jam into church the other week and one of the ladies came up to me on Sunday and asked if it was me who'd brought it. She took one and said she didn't know if she was supposed to or not. I told her they were there for whoever wanted them and that empty jars get full jars. I need the empties because we still have tons of frozen apricots to make jam with.
Jars are expensive. My mom was saying she could get them for 75 cents at the thrift store she works at if they can keep them on the shelves. I told her that new ones were about that price so thanks, but no thanks. And we're well blessed with quart jars. It's the pints and half pints we're running out of.
I thought I was going to have to jump into action today. This crazy lady was dogging the guy with the cardboard sign at the Smiths; she wanted her money. He was yelling at her to quit stalking him. I went in the store because it looked like crazy was evenly matched. When I came out, they both were gone. So much for working that corner today. If dude had got physical, I would have had to leap into action. Thankfully, that's not what was in store for me at the store. I never know what to do with those kinds of things.
Bucket is sleeping. Chili sauce is cooking down. Miss June is out like a light. She is tired. And my houseguest is crocheting while I'm clicking away on the computer keyboard. We've had a full day or four around here. I'm looking forward to going back to work, where at least I get breaks.
