Nothing goes to waste
When they all had enough to eat, He said to the disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." John 6:12 (NIV)
I wanted to resurrect my old 2007 macbook computer because it still works. Not the best, but it still does. When it became apparent though that I was at the end of being able to do that, I was ready to just put it in the box and tuck it away because I'd ordered a brand new computer.
I tried upgrading the memory to be able to upgrade the software last evening, but with no success. I cannot even upgrade to the last version of operating system that, in theory, should run on that computer. But a funny thing happened this afternoon. I'd mentioned about the laptop in chit-chat at the beginning of our staff meeting and my pastor told me that one of the men in the congregation might be able to help me upgrade it.
Later on in the day, that same man was at the church troubleshooting some technical issues with the sound equipment and this is where things got interesting. The secretary had mentioned that I had an old macbook to him and we talked a little computer talk before he got started. About an hour and a half into his work, he asked me about my computer, as in, does it still work, and do I have a firewire cable for it. The answers to both was yes.
It turned out that one piece of equipment still works but it's older and the newer computers can't run the software for it, but my old macbook sure could. I went home and retrieved it and the cable and the man was able to correct an issue with the equipment. Instead of heading for some forced upgrades that may or may not have worked, it turns out it's just better for for me to remove my personal stuff from the computer andlet the church keep it around as a backup in case this piece of equipment crashes again.
I'm thinking that the frustrated attempts I made to upgrade the thing both last night and this morning were likely frustrated for a reason. While the computer may not be any good to me, it certainly came in handy at the church. I'm happy that in God's economy, nothing gets wasted. I got blessed to have a newer computer and I'm blessed to be a blessing in re-homing my old one.
