You can't make this stuff up

“And now, O Israel, listen to wthe statutes and the rules1 that I am teaching you, and do them, xthat you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. yYou shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you.  Deuteronomy 4:1-2 (ESV)

I tell people from time to time that I get opportunities to serve God.  One is through my job.  Other times, I get to teach God's word to help people new to it to understand it.  God has blessed me with opportunities to bring a message on Sunday mornings.  I enjoy that because I like to write and I get to learn things about His word, or sometimes a new concept I hadn't fully understood.

I'm careful to be careful with the Word because it's very easy to take things out of context to prove a point especially if one has an agenda.  I have to admit, I have an agenda, but it's the only one a human should have when dealing with God and His Word and mine is to teach it correctly, according to God, not man, not me, but according to God.

It's called rightly dividing the word and I hope I do a good job.  Sometimes though, I've mis-spoken or not fully understood something I was asked about.  When that happens, the errors are unintentional and the Holy Spirit helps me understand the correct meaning.  I then go back and fess up to the error.  I'd rather look stupid than let people believe something incorrect.  If I don't know the answer, I say so and tell the people I will research it for next week.

You can't make stuff up about God's word without consequences.  Paul wrote that we should all not seek to be teachers because they'll be held to a higher standard.  I think it's wise to remember that, and also wise to say yes if God is allowing us to teach because if we rely on the Holy Spirit to help us rightly divide the Word, we're blessed to be a blessing to others.
