another day another metaphor
I went to the doctor this morning for my thumb. I'm in a splint for a while and it may give me an unexpected vacation next week. That isn't fun. I missed out on 24 hours of overtime this weekend that would have been such a blessing. Not to be. Apparently what I wanted wasn't what I needed.
I spent last night and this morning looking for mowers on KSL. I have a big yard and I need something more than just your $99 cheapo mower. I couldn't find anything decent for under $150 and at that every nice mower I called about was sold before I got a chance to get there. I did look, though. I even looked at the pawn shop.
I have a new mower. I went shopping this afternoon. I learned a lot about mowers today, mostly from a very unlikely source. A lady and I were at Home Depot today looking at the same mowers at the same time and she'd done her homework. She asked the salesman some very good questions and I listened in. I'd made a decision and went to get a cart to put my new mower on. She hadn't made up her mind when I returned to the mower section. I was going for the $349 Toro mower. The model just below it was $279. It only had one speed and a .25 horsepower smaller engine. It wasn't as fancy as the one that came with a good recommendation from Consumer Reports.
I wanted a new Honda. Not in the price range. The Toro would have to do, but the Toro mowers Home Depot carries aren't the super nice Toro mowers. Those are over $500 and they're very nice mowers. I looked at them at the mower shop today. The Honda like my old one is about $600 these days.
Anyway, as I approached the mower section, I noticed a shiny new Toro sitting with some other power equipment. I walked up and noticed it was the $279 model but this one was reconditioned and carried a price tag of $195.00. I think the lady was quite upset that I found the good deal before she did but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. .
Sometimes in life we may not get what we want, but what we need. The Rolling Stones were right!
Having what we want sometimes isn't in God's perfect plan for us; or maybe it's just the timing to get what we want. It might be in God's time we get what we want, but in the mean time, we have to settle for what we have. Understanding that is hard. Accepting it is even harder.
But what about those times when what we want isn't in God's plan for us? How do you know? I can't answer that. Nobody can answer that for me. I know what I want for me. God has a plan for me, too and the thing is this: If I call Jesus Lord and don't let Him be Lord, doesn't that make me a hypocrite? Besides, the smack downs for veering off the path tend to get my attention quite quickly these days.
In all things, God's will is always best and even with a hurt thumb I give thanks because there was a lesson in there. I found a great deal on a mower that I'm so grateful for. Since she returned home, my friend Tami Jo has been so blessed. Tami and I stayed faithful to God and for that God has richly blessed her and her family! It's nice to be grateful to God for blessing your friends too. So, you might be asking, why didn't God bless me, too?
He did. He has my undivided attention. And He helped me find a nice new shiny red mower that won't hurt me when I try to start it. And he taught me some things in the last couple of days that I, for whatever reason, needed to learn, and learn quickly, too.
