finding things

I finished up the master bedroom remodel project today.  At the end of the project, I rummaged around the house and found some things to put in the bedroom so I could take some pictures of it.

The first thing I put in the room was my sister's old bed.  From when we were kids, old.  It's kind of an off white now, but when she first got the bed, it was white-white and had a canopy.  The canopy is long gone, but I still have the bed frame with a newer mattress and box spring set.   My sister gave it to me to use as a guest room bed.  To cover the bed, I found a sheet that my grandmother had embroidered some lace and what looks to be a French woman on, with matching pillowcases.  I put a table in the room and two pictures I found around the house are on either corner.  I found an old decorative water can among the treasures, too.  I put it on the table on top of a doily my grandmother embroidered many years ago.

We had a white floor lamp, so I moved that next to the bed.  As I cleaned out the closet, I found a little white step stool Wendi bought so Snot could get up on the bed (Snot was old, he couldn't jump up on the big bed anymore).  I found an old chair in the family room that I put under the table as well. (it's not white)

The closet door pulls in the master bedroom used to be just big blocks of wood.  I replaced them with some nice pulls that sort of match the curtain rods and light fixture.  I had to cut some screws to length so they'd fit.  The screws were just a little bit smaller than the old screws so I used some large area washers on the inside of the closet doors.  Sometimes, being a mechanic pays off.  I thought I'd need to buy new curtains but the blue checked curtains actually look pretty good against the walls.

The room looked kind of empty with just a twin bed and table in it, so just to fill up the space, I moved this little white baby crib Wendi found someplace into the room.  I have all kinds of stuff in this house.

I wanted to get rid of the lock that was on the bedroom door so I rummaged around in the garage and found the original doorknob for my bedroom.  I found some newer doorknobs that I really liked at Lowe's but they were almost $30 a piece and if I changed one, I'd have to change five so they all matched.  That wasn't in the budget for this project.  In fact this whole project wasn't in the budget.

I managed to clean the carpets as best I could, but the dogs have been kind of rough on it.  The carpet under the bed was really dirty from the dogs laying under it.  As I mentioned, Bucket ate a hole in the carpet under the bed (I miss that dumb dog).  I need to replace it at some point, but not right now.  It's just gonna have to do.

I only bought what I absolutely had to have to complete this little project and at the end, the master bedroom looks nothing like it did on Thursday.  I found things to make it nice, instead of buying things which is kind of a change for me.  In the process, I got to find some nice things my grandmother made for me when I was a kid, too.  I have a crocheted duck that hides an Easter egg that she made me when I was a boy.  I had no idea I still had it.  I also still have my soap turtle.  My grandmother crocheted a lot and she made us these little turtles that hold a bar of soap and you use them to wash yourself with.

Finding those things made me smile.

I found something else I hadn't seen in a while.  I worked my butt off on my house this weekend and it wasn't a chore.  I had fun.  I took my time. There are a few goofs, a few runs in the paint, but all in all, I did a good job.  It was a labor of love, for sure.  But it was enjoyable and I stayed busy.  At the end, I put my things away, cleaned up the mess, and cleaned up some clutter that was around the house, too.  For one brief moment, I found some happiness.

I don't know how long I'll leave the room like that.  For now, I'm just kind of camped out in one of the little bedrooms down the hall.  I figure it'll take a few days for the paint fumes to settle down so I moved the regular bedroom furniture into one of the smaller bedrooms.  Even thought they're smaller, I still was able to fit a night stand, dresser, and king size bed into it with room to move and could still use the built-in desk.  I've been wanting to put some of my military trinkets up so I might do that in this room.

I'll do some more rummaging around tomorrow and see what I can find.
