Me, Miss June, and the lesson I learned today

My mother-in-law helped me learn a very valuable lesson today.

For all the talk, sometimes I find I can be a bit selfish.  Miss June had a very simple request for me today.  She was off work and asked if I would please take her to a nursery I'd heard of in Layton.  She also wanted to buy a new filter and pump for me for the pool.  For some reason, the pool is important this year, though neither of us can put a finger on just why, but that's a different story.  She suggested we could stop off in Layton at the Wal-mart on our way to the garden center.

I didn't want to.  I just wanted to run to Wal-mart, get the thing and get home.  Two hours, three Wal-marts later, no pool filter.  Each store was out of them in Ogden.

I came home and realized that Miss June does a lot for me without ever asking me.  She feeds me, sneaks my laundry in, does just a bunch of things for me.  She asked me to do something which was not a big deal and I didn't want to.  After some quick self-examination and feeling like a jerk, I googled the address for the nursery and off we went.  We stopped at the Layton Wal-mart, where they had two of the pool filters I needed in stock.

Had I listened to her in the first place, I wouldn't have run all over creation and we would have been home two hours before.  Miss June loves the nursery.  She'd saved some money to buy flowers for our home and picked out some beautiful geraniums and petunias.  She let me choose some snapdragons, then helped me pick out some zinnias and some dahlias as well.  We selected some vegetables for our garden which will finally go in on Saturday.

I took the night off to help Miss June.  The lawn will wait until tomorrow.  We're on a break right now, but I'm back out there to help her plant our things we bought tonight and tomorrow.  I'm going to grill up some chicken for dinner and if we have time (night owls as we are) we might even watch a movie together.

I was reminded of something today.  It ain't always about me.  Life is so much better when I don't put myself first.

Well, off to help the immigrant!  Hope you had a blessed day.
