What you can't see may be more important than what you can
I posted some pictures of my back yard on my Facebook page last night. My yard is greener than it's ever been because of all the rain. I've talked about Lark Circle Farm a lot and most of my friends live points south of Salt Lake, so they're a bit reluctant to make the drive without going all the way to Idaho to buy lottery tickets, so I shared some photos of the joint.
One of the photos was of my ghetto fabulous, shabby chic' swimming pool. In the picture, you can see what appears to be a gigantic rubber ducky wearing sunglasses floating on the top of the pool. In fact, my friend Tami Jo made a wisecrack about my rubber ducky. After all, the kids are grown well past the point of rubber ducks, so it looks a bit strange for a grown man to have one in his swimming pool.
What you can't see in the photo is that the duck has a job. A very important job, in fact. Attached to the bottom of the duck is a cylinder that holds the chlorine tablets that keep the pool clean and chlorinated. It's designed to release just the right amount of chlorine into the water until the tablets dissolve. It works pretty well.
When I started the blog last year (under a different name and with a different focus), I talked to y'all about the Four Agreements. One of these is "Don't Make Assumptions". The duck today serves as a metaphor for all things in life that are uncertain.
I know all too well the old adage about things that says, 'If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...) And often that's true. BUT:
Sometimes, we look at what's on the surface and draw conclusions without seeing what's below the surface. We make assumptions based on what we perceive when there's something else going on that what's on the surface masks. That surface picture is often a mask to hide what's really happening and as human beings, to a certain extent, I think we've all been guilty of trying to cover things up to hide from others what the truth of our circumstances really is. Conversely, sometimes it appears as things are one way, when in fact, the opposite would be true.
There's a lyric from a song I like that says "There might me more than you believe, there might be more than you can see." These words have a ring of truth to them today, for some reason. I think the duck reminded me of that and it was something I wanted to share with you today.
I think there's an important lesson today in the little metaphor of the duck (love me some metaphors). I hope there's something y'all can use in your life to make it better. Remember, don't assume... ask questions, then decide. Hiding just below the surface, there might be something you can't see...
Have a blessed day and as always, thanks for reading the blog.

Thanks dude! =) Assume means, make an ass out of me! You did a great job. LOL Paybacks are double, just wait. It was a great point and quite funny at that. I had to leave that message though, it fit the picture!
ReplyDeleteNo, Tami, thank you for the chuckle and for the idea for today's blog.
ReplyDeleteYour payback came in the form of me having the Bert & Ernie version of "rubber duckie" playing over and over in my head all day long.
Thank you for THAT!
