too much for one person?
I haven't been this tired since last year when I drove 2/3 of the way across this country after a three hour nap. I guess I'm getting old and need my sleep. Sleep, though, has been pretty tough to find the last week, with working and all of the things going on around here. This week looks to be no exception because of the holiday on Thursday. If I hadn't already purchased the meal and invited people to dinner, we'd be dining out.
Yup. Dining out.
I heard Golden Corral puts on a pretty good feed on Thanksgiving.
I love Thanksgiving. It's my second favorite holiday, next to Christmas. I love everything about it, even the cooking part which has fallen back to me. I like to cook so it's not a big deal. It's just going to take a few extra days to get things done and time seems to be at a premium.
I started the prep work today by making things that could be made ahead of time, like a cheese ball and the spinach dip. Those will keep and will probably taste a little better after sitting for a day or two. They're also relatively easy to make. I'll get around to finishing up some other things like cranberry sauce and making some fudge, too. Again, things that will keep.
The big stuff will have to be Wednesday. I don't see much of my roomie these days. She's busy with her grandchildren, which I think is a wonderful thing. There was a time I wasn't sure that relationship could ever be repaired, but God made a way. It's wonderful for her, but that puts most of the responsibility for keeping up on things to me, and last week I didn't do so hot for the simple reason that I just wasn't home much.
This house is huge. It's not a boast; just stating a fact. I love living here and I'm not complaining. The garden this year was a blessing beyond measure. I'm so very grateful for this home. It's just hard to take care of on your own. Well, it's not that hard, really. What makes it hard is to find the happy thought about getting it done.
I'm still pretty happy from the weekend. I still don't know why for sure, but maybe it's one of the many reasons I listed yesterday. Who knows? I do know that getting things done around here is much, much easier when you have that happy thought. Really, though, what I'm lacking in, and have always been lacking in, is a good to-do list. Right now, the do's outnumber the dones by a considerable margin. Two down, many, many more to go.
Fortunately, it's all simple stuff, like putting the china in the dishwasher. That's fairly simple. Another item is cleaning the bathrooms. Mine is a mess because of the ongoing paint project that will be finished over the weekend. Nobody will see that one, though, so it's off the list. The main bathroom is another story, altogether. It's not gross dirty. It's just on the list. Sweeping is a daily chore and that's done. Mopping will happen sometime early Thursday morning.
A lot of things are already done. The tablecloth and napkins are clean and ready to go. The "good" flatware is cleaned. The china is in the cabinet and just needs to be run through the dishwasher. That should take about three loads. The bigger pieces get washed by hand. Tomorrow I'll chop up the onions and celery for the stuffing. I might even dig some carrots up out of the garden on Wednesday to have with our meal. I haven't decided between carrots and brussels sprouts.
Oh, yeah, and the $^*@ Christmas lights need to go up on the house. I shouldn't complain. I put them up for me mostly, because I'm still just a big kid at heart. It's just another thing on the to-do list.
Add laundry to that list. Back when I owned a functioning washing machine, I could do a load here or there. Um, yeah, not so much. Miss June is old school and I have clean clothes because she learned as a girl to do laundry by hand. We're going to get a washer on Friday, but that's going to require a trip to the laundromat between now and then. And I'm not sure when I'm going to see her between now and then.
I mentioned a lack of sleep. I woke up this morning because my hand itched. Have you ever tired to bumble around at who-knows-what-time-it-was in the morning with itchy hands and try to find a bottle of lotion in the disaster that is your bedroom because everything is moved while you're painting the bathroom? Not much sleep last night, either.
So, you may be asking yourself why I'm wasting time writing this instead of working on the list? I'm multi-tasking. Even as we speak, four loaves of bread are going stale on the counter because I ripped open the plastic bread bags.
That's doing something, right?
