Getting 'cited

I'm getting a little excited about the renovation going on downstairs.  The walls were painted on Thursday and I went down this morning to get a peek at what it looked like first hand.  I've been meaning to go exploring but I've been either busy during the day or just too tired at night.  This morning, though we were moving tile into the basement and I got my first look at it, and the difference between what was there and what is there now is night and day.

My contractor and I had a little chat about paint, too.  He decided to use the paint/primer combo for the first time on my basement and he had to paint it twice.  In the long run, it actually wound up costing him more to paint it with that than it would have to primer it first, he told me.  I've used it once, when I repainted my bedroom and I had the same problem with it.  To get it to cover properly, I had to paint it twice.

And when I did, because of the color that was on the wall and the purple I used, the bedroom wound up looking like a ginormous easter egg for a while.  It kind of gave me a headache.

Tile, as I said, is what's happening today in the basement.  The kitchen area is being tiled today.  If I'd had some money, I'd have made a little countertop/cabinet divider between the living space and the kitchen area, to kind of separate the two.  For now, though, it'll do as is.

We have about a week left until carpet comes.  Carpet should be about the last thing, so during this week tile, cabinets, and countertops go in.  Hardware goes on doors.  Light fixtures will be hung  The toilet gets set. Moulding for the front door gets done and then we're finished.

YAY!

One thing I'm happy about is that I've had the luxury of not being in any particular hurry to get this finished.  The contractor has taken his time, done things right, not been in a hurry and because I was willing to work around his schedule, he's tossed in this or that thing.  It's been a great thing and I have not one complaint.

When it's all finished, I'll post pictures online for y'all to see.

After the contractor is done, then it's up to me.  I'll be looking for a smaller used washer and dryer, a nice used range and smaller refrigerator to finish it off.  At that point, it becomes a fully-functional mother-in-law apt.  A house within a house, if you will.

That I can't rent.  Part of my mortgage stipulates that I cannot rent out the basement.  This was the only way the VA would loan me the money for the house.  I can't move out of it and rent the entire house, either.  I suppose I could move downstairs and rent the top half of the house, and I'm actually seriously considering this.  Everything I'd need for me is downstairs, but to rent the house, I'd need to repaint and re-carpet.  I need to do that anyhow, I suppose, but I already have a purple bedroom.  It's not good to let me try to pick things out on my own.

So, I don't know what I'm going to do, except be thankful for the blessing that came after the flood.  And enjoy knowing it's down there and that maybe God has something in mind that I don't see right now.

You just never know!
