more about the garden

Six days ago, there were at least a dozen cucumber plants in the garden.  Today, there are none.  A couple of them died from transplant shock, but where the others went is anyone's guess.  It's possible some kind of a bird had a cucumber 'jones', but it's more likely that it's the result of the weather.  It went from cool to instant hot today.

It was a good day for the garden.  There are new onions sprouting up.  There are green beans sprouting up.  Corn is pushing its way through the soil as well.  Warming up the ground seemed to be just the ticket for getting things moving along.  The peas grew about six inches today and they're blossoming.

Weeds are making their way back after a few weeks of being under control.  The hot weather caused lots of weed seeds to germinate.  The next few days will be spent mulching around plants with last fall's leaves.  They were headed for the compost pile but to keep down on weeds, the rows will be mulched as much as practical.

The strawberry patch is trying to fight its way back.  There were just a few berries this year.  They're not very large, but they were very tasty.  One thing about the stray pussycats; they keep the birds out of the strawberries.  Weeding the berry patches will commence tomorrow.  There just wasn't enough time today.  The blackberry is doing really well and there should be a few blackberries, too.  Yum!

The corn package was right about seven to ten days to germinate.  The next big thing to blossom will be the rows of green beans that were planted with the hickeylooper.  If it stays as warm as it was today, it won't be long before they'll be up.  There are some rogue vegetables growing in the garden, too.  I think I mentioned there are carrots here and there.  There is endive.  There are a few turnips that grew.  These are from seed that didn't germinate for whatever reasons when it was planted.  After the beans, then it'll be beets and carrots.  When they blossom, the bare spots will show themselves and something will be planted there, too.

The potatoes we planted are doing very well, too.  It's time to start hilling them up, according to Miss June.  She says that when they flower, that's when you pile the dirt up around the plants.  When you bury the green part it gives you more potatoes in the fall.  At least that's the theory.

Our flowers are doing really well, too.  I don't remember so many rose blossoms on the roses that made it through the winter.  The tea rose the neighbor took out when he rebuilt the fence earlier this spring refuses to die.  It's back and with a vengeance.  It'll take up just as much space in the back yard as it did, if not more.  There are ginormous peonies too.  They're dark pink and light pink and the blossoms are huge.  The lilies in the front are ready to blossom, too.  The orange lilies in the back aren't doing so hot so they're getting a dose of miracle grow tomorrow!  Most of the flowers around here are perennials and it's always exciting for the next thing to blossom.  A couple of our hollyhocks came back this year. I don't like the color (they're black) but they're neat flowers.  The russian sage bush is making a comeback, too. It is a neat little plant; it both smells good and takes up lots of space. For some reason the winter was rough on it and some of the roses.

It's a weird year for fruit trees this year.  The dwarf peach we have has few leaves and lots of peaches.  The other peach tree is loaded for bear.  There are hardly any apples on the apple trees in the yard.  The neighbor is in the same boat this year, too.  There are few apricots on the tree as well and it won't be a surprise if the ones that make it all the way through are as big as peaches.  There are two nectarines on the nectarine tree.  It blossomed the same time as the peach tree.  They're about ten feet apart.  There were lots of blooms.  There is no fruit.

Yet the neighbor's cherry tree is loaded.

Do you have a gardening tip to share?  Wanna trade flowers?  June can root and grow just about anything and we'll be happy to trade.

Well, thanks for reading about the garden.  Tomorrow we're gonna talk about something else.  And thank you as always for reading the blog, which today, in which there was not one "I" statement.

God bless all y'all and please don't forget to attend a worship service tomorrow.
