Goin' old school

When was the last time you bought clothes pins?

The clerk at Winco Foods (shameless plug) was surprised her store even carried them.  Honestly, so was I.  I thought this was going to be a difficult item to find but the same folks that make stick matches also make wooden clothespins.  I didn't go completely old school, they're the metal spring kind.  I like Winco.  They're cheap.  They also had foot long hotdogs AND foot long hotdog buns.  And chili for 95 cents a can.  Guess what's fer supper around here one night next week?

Why did I need the clothespins?

Well, I've erected something in my backyard that looks like some sort of 1950's television antenna array.  It's a clothesline.  It was embedded in the garage.  I mean that.  Boards were nailed up to hide this thing in the studs.  I had to saw them to get the thing out.  Fortunately, I had just the power tool for the job.  I'm not on a survivalist kick by any means but running the dryer costs a lot of money so Miss June wanted to hang the laundry out to dry.  Now she can.

A small hole, a level, and a half a bag of post mix later, and the thing is up and functioning.

Why not?  We're already shabby chic' around here... why not hang the undies out in the back yard too?

I really am far past the point of worrying about what the neighbors think.  That's what fences are for.

The thing looks really out of place but then again, with the above ground pool and the chaise lounge that has probably seen its last summer, maybe not.

The thing, just like everything else around here, needs a bit of love.  It needs to be restrung, so I'm going to see if Wal-mart or Target carries clothes line.  I'll bet Wal-mart does.

Seriously, though, if it saves a couple of dollars a month, why not?  It's not like my yard is this ginormous showpiece.  Certainly it's not.  I'm having a hard time just keeping parts of it green.  I have sprinklers and a dead spot about a foot in front of the sprinklers.  That one is beyond me.

On to other things:

Corn is on the menu tonight at Lark Circle.  Fresh picked today corn from my garden.  I found three ears that are close.  I also found where a critter pulled down a corn stalk and ate an ear.  I think it was a coon.

Hey, we share.  Most of the corn stalks didn't set ears.  The few that did are still really small.  There were three however, that were ready for pickin'.  So I picked 'em.

The commissary had unbelievable deals on ribs today, so I have ribs on the smoker.

Yum.

There are still fresh tomatoes, green beans, and summer squash, too.  I gotta go get some cottage cheese to go with them, though.  We had stuffed tomatoes for dinner last night.  That was also quite a refreshing treat.  I suspect we'll be canning tomatoes sometime next week.  Probably be doing something with peaches, too.  That little tree of mine is loaded for bear.

I enjoy this time of year.  Fall is sure trying to get here in a hurry and I'm not the only one noticing it.  June says her gardening co-workers all say the same thing... it's like all of the plants are trying to hurry and get things done.  We'll see, but the trees are talking loudly.  They're all kinds of in a fall mode and have been for about a month.
