hamming it up
I was gonna buy a ham the other day. In fact, I left the house and headed down the street. Ham is on sale and I've always wanted to try this particular type of ham. But then, there was this nagging thing that told me to not go buy the ham. So I, for once, listened, although I couldn't for the life of me understand what the big deal about picking up a ham was. I just turned around and came home
Today I understood why. Ham money was spent on ice melt. Wal-mart got a shipment in this morning (news courtesy of my next door neighbor) and I bought 200 pounds of the stuff.
That's kind of a dumb story, I know. But it's an important one when you look at it from the viewpoint of a bigger picture; one of following that still-small voice that guides a Christian. It's a story of really not understanding something but being willing to trust and obey. It's all the things we as Christians are supposed to do, and sometimes don't.
Not buying the ham meant saying no to self. The money was needed elsewhere, but at the time I didn't see freezing rain causing so many problems. We don't get freezing rain here. But then we did. And because I listened, there were funds available to purchase what I need. I'm glad I did listen because it's just another lesson learned about how God can prompt us through the day if we're willing to listen. From that point of view, it's kind of neat to think that God knew what He was going to do and that I was not prepared for it. He helped me be prepared by guiding me in another direction.
Again, it's only a story about a ham, but I can't help but wonder today what else I might have missed. And I know all too well what can happen when you ignore that little voice.
Hams will wait. They're still curing them and maybe when I get paid next Friday there just might be enough to buy one. In the mean time, there is lasagna I made the other day and italian sausage for dinner. They're thawing out now, and should be ready to re-heat after work.
I guess you go along and you learn. Today I'm thankful that the driveway ice came off easily because the ice melt loosened it up, but more than that I'm thankful to God for a lesson or two this week about life to the full.
Ask me sometime to tell you the cotter pin story from last night!
God is good!

The ice will melt. I would have went with one of Gods greatest creations, HAM
ReplyDeleteWanted the ham. Needed the ice-melt. BTW the hams are $2.19 a pound at the IFA. Maybe on payday if they still have some left.
