I sorta got called on the carpet for not writing this, so here it is. Events of the day just kind of warranted other stories, but this one is by far, the most important one of the weekend.
It's a story about starting something. It's also a story about the power of prayer and the motivation of one man in humble circumstances. But it's not my story.
It's the story of Nehemiah, cupbearer to the king, (read wine taster...if the king's wine was poisoned Nehemiah was gonna be the first to know!). He was part of the remnant of Israel and was grieved that Jerusalem and God's chosen people were in ruin. It's the story of how he fasted and prayed and then was given not just permission but money and materials to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
It's a great story and here's how it works into today's story.
I'm sometimes a random Bible reader. I also am a systematic reader so I stay grounded in the Word. I'm getting to know the Bible so when I need a pick-me-up or some guidance, I know where to turn. In my random reading, I'd turned to the book of Nehemiah. In fact, there is a bookmark in my KJV to Nehemiah. Long before the sermon about how Nehemiah prayed, I had been drawn to the book.
I think it's got something to do with rebuilding, or building something, but I'm just speculating.
Because I don't have the opportunity to meet with the regular Bible study in the evening, and I wasn't alone. someone came up with the idea that we should have a men's prayer/Bible study in the afternoon. Our first meeting was small and as we discussed what we'd study, Nehemiah was mentioned and I suggested, eagerly, that we start there. I was also surprised when I saw Vincent (NO, not that one!) who used to come in to the bakery all the time, sitting at the table. He was there on other business but that would have been interesting to have him join us.
Anyway, I still think that God can use small things for mighty purposes. It's what I was talking about when I said the morning on Thursday was far more important to me and enjoyable than a couple of beers at the bar with co-workers. I got so much more out of the morning.
Anyway, we're studying Nehemiah. And if you're interested and available on Thursdays at 11:30 for about an hour, and are interested, please join us. The church is at 25th & Jefferson. You can't miss it, it's the big red and white building on the corner that looks like a church. And I promise the roof won't fall in if you walk in!
