Thankfulness....

Today is a day for Thanksgiving.  We celebrate with football, an elaborate meal (you ought to see what's happening in the kitchen right now!), and times with family and maybe friends, too.  In some homes, there will be the traditional arguments over politics, or even over things that have strained relationships.  In other homes, there will be family football games, love, joy, and time together.  Either way, it's a day where memories are usually made.

I said in the title this is about thankfulness, not Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving is a day set aside for thanking God for the bountiful harvest, and everything in our lives.  Thankfulness is when we do that each and every day, despite the circumstances.

I have a litany of things to be grateful for.  Each is a blessing.  But so are the challenges in my life.  I've learned thankfulness.  I've learned to live with a contrite heart and to find blessings in the worst of circumstances.  It's that gift from God, that knowing He loves me enough to not just let me do whatever I want that is forefront in my mind this year.

Thankfulness for what I have has replaced that incessant need I used to have to buy stuff I didn't.  I gotta say this, too.  I'm in love again.  This time it's shiny stainless steel and fries turkeys indoors!  If they don't tell you what it costs, that tells me I can't afford it.  I have enough stuff.  I have too much stuff.

Thankfulness is that spirit I think that is talked about in the Bible where we get to the point that we can honestly give thanks with a grateful heart in all circumstances.  It takes something I've been saying for years and puts it into a different light.  In judging the magnitude of something, I always work backwards from dead.  If I'm not dead, then I have two things:  Something to be grateful for and hope.

I had a good week.  I'm thankful for that.  I'm thankful for a very good friend of mine being blessed with a car she badly needed.  I'm thankful that my friend Ron isn't coming to dinner today because he has a new girlfriend who is fixing dinner for him. I get just as excited these days about seeing blessings in other people's lives as I do in my own.  I'm thankful for time spent with my son a couple of weeks ago and hoping there will be more times.

I hope all y'all have a wonderful Thanksgiving day.  Try to make it a part of your every day, won't you?

God bless y'all,

Coop
