Prep day...
I don't spend a ton of time in the kitchen anymore and it kind of shows. June and I spent a few minutes today finding things that we don't frequently use. Sometimes it's hard to remember where you put something you only use once a year.
I had to run downtown this morning to the kitchen store. I only had one pie protector ring. I'm baking two pies. These things work great. You make your pie then put the protector ring over the edge and the crust doesn't burn.
I love playing with my gadgets, as I've said before and today gives me a good chance to do that. A food processor makes quick work of onions, celery, carrots, and apples. All of which are simmering now in a crock pot with two packages of frozen squash and some chicken stock. I couldn't find the recipe for squash soup I wanted, but I did find this one instead. I'm making this today so it can sit overnight and get lots of flavor. It's the first course at the feast tomorrow.
The dishes have been washed and we're ready to get things cooking tomorrow. Today, I think I'm going to boil the yams and get that dish ready for the oven, too. I've only made candied yams once and that was last year. I gotta find a recipe for those, too. I'm sure it can't be too hard to figure out, though.
Cranberry sauce is going to be made just as soon as I finish typing this. I'm going to make two kinds this year. I want to try a cranberry/pear thing. I don't have a recipe for it or anything... just something I'm going to try. It sounds kinda good. I'm thinking cranberries, pear pieces, maybe a little orange zest for some zing. I bought two bags, one to make regular stuff, the other to make this.
I have to get the sliver out, but I know where that is already. That will just need to be rinsed off before the table is set. The tablecloth is back from the cleaners and it and the napkins will be placed on the table in the morning. We're ready.
I invited two guests to dinner. One has to work, so I'll be taking her a plate of food like I did last year. The second guest had a better offer. He has a girlfriend who is making dinner for him. YAY! Nobody should have to go through this alone and I'm very happy for him.
We're eating a bit earlier than I'd like to but Miss June has to work in the evening, so we're eating now at one instead of two. I think there's plenty of food because I'd bought and planned to cook for at least eight, but now we're down to four. I'm cooking a 26 pound turkey. I think there's leftovers and turkey sandwiches for about a while.
Well, gotta get back to the kitchen... there are gadgets to play with some more, bread crumbs need toasted, onions and celery to chop, apples to peel and chop, and the list goes on and on. Hope you're having as much fun as I am getting ready for tomorrow. Church services today at four if you're in Ogden.
Oh yeah, tomorrow's blog is about thankfuness, not just thanksgiving, but thankfulness. If you read it, comment on what you're thankful for. It only takes a second to leave a comment.
