I guess I could fix it.
I paid $35 for a "fan" belt for my washing machine today. $35. That's $15 more than the serpentine belt for June's Saturn cost me. That's outrageous! But not as outrageous as the sign I saw at the first place I went to get the part.
Here's what they wanted for labor: $60 for the first 30 minutes, then $17 for each 15 minutes thereafter. That's $70 an hour. I took me a little over an hour to change the washing machine belt. I had to bend the idler pulley arm back into place so that took some trial and error. It must've bent when the belt let go.
It's not a permanent repair, either. Something caused said belt to break and by how loud the washer sounds when it spins, it almost sounds like a bearing in the thing is going bad. When it finally does, I'm getting a new used washing machine. I can't afford the parts and after looking on KSL yesterday, a used washer might be the way to go. I can't afford a new one right now.
Then there's the problem of what to do with the old ones. I have another washer downstairs. It leaks water. It's not worth fixing. We paid, I think, $75 for it. It owes me nothing. I guess I'll find a junk dealer to come get them. I have a water heater he can take, too.
I can't believe that belt was so expensive. I should have followed my instincts and gone to the SmithyEdwards and looked to see if they had a replacement. A generic belt probably would have been about $15. Hey, I guess I shouldn't gripe. The washer has been repaired and seems to function all right. I'm getting ready to give it a test drive here shortly. It ran all right with no clothes in it so I'm gonna take a chance.
I'm not a laundry guy to begin with. I'm blessed that Miss June takes care of that kind of stuff. I can't let a pile of clothes accumulate around here. I'm so thankful for her because I hate doing it. I hate the laundromat even worse. I'm not too good for it, but it's the whole laundry smell and everything. It reminds me of being TDY and sharing washers with 500 other people. I know some people are nasty and that's why I like my own laundry facilities.
The house has two hookups, one set up and one set down. That's why I kept the old washer. We replaced the dryer when it went bad but decided to keep the washing machine. When we got it downstairs, it started leaking. Go figure. So it's just accumulating dust. When they brought the new washer & dryer, I let them take the dryer away. I should have given them both.
It's a beautiful day out. I thought I was going to be able to work some OT today, but I guess not. I didn't get a chance to talk to my boss on Thursday to find out if it was approved so I'm at home. I might go pull out the starter from my tractor and maybe even take a trip to harbor freight to see if they can help me find a replacement engine for my tiller.
That would be a blessing to get that thing running again. Garden has to go in next week, at least the underground stuff. Hope you're enjoying your Saturday!
