collateral damage

I dropped the engine of my tractor on my finger today.  It hurts.

It really hurts.

Hey, things happen, but the tractor story is a good one about patience and attention to detail.  I got in a hurry to fix it the other day and assembled the starter incorrectly.  About seven dollars in parts incorrectly but I have a great story about this.

I bought the parts on e-bay for $7.75 on Tuesday afternoon.  They were on my doorstep at nine-thirty this morning, from Ohio.  I went to the shop where I bought the original repair kit and they didn't have another one.  I really didn't need another one so to speak, just the certain parts that once you put together that you can't take apart.  They don't come in that kind of kit anymore, but they used to and I found them on e-bay.  I had an appointment this morning but after that appointment, I worked on the tractor.  A band-aid and a can of fix-o-flat later, and by one o'clock this afternoon, the tractor was dragging a harrow across the back 40.

I'm hoping that's going to be the end of fixing things around here for a while.  I'm so lucky I got the parts that fast.  Our mailman was not our usual letter carrier.  My mail man is a she, so I guess letter carrier is the more appropriate term.  Mail never comes that early to my house.  What a blessing it was to have this little surprise.  The tractor was repaired and put back together before the rains came.  I'm happy about that.  On Saturday, I'll drive it down to the garage, check the oil, and lube the chassis.  I might even get out the files and sharpen the plow share on Saturday or Sunday to see if it'll drag better.

That's not fixing stuff, that's maintaining stuff.  Maintaining stuff is good.  Fixing stuff is a pain in the you-know-what sometimes.  Sometimes there's collateral damage.  The washing machine did a good number on my arm.  The scratches are almost healed.  My poor middle finger on my left hand will probably lose a fingernail.  But like skin, they grow back and in a month or so I'll be brand new.

I'm not upset by the injury.  Things happen, but I'm so blessed that the parts came in such a short time.  I'm blessed to save $18, and I got what I needed.  I just had to wait a day or so.  I truly had a good afternoon just riding around on my little tractor getting the garden workable.  The rain will certainly help tonight and tomorrow.  That ground is already harder than hammered lightning.

Well, gang, it hurts to type so I'm out.  I'm done both fixing and talking about fixing stuff.  Thanks for putting up with the boring stuff on the blog this week but it's all that's worth talking about that I can talk about.
