Getting my 'Kitchen" on!

I went grocery shopping today and I came home sick to my stomach.  I remember just a couple of years ago when a full grocery cart would cost just a little over $200 and last for the better part of three weeks.  I went to the store today and blew $180 and didn't buy hardly anything.  I bought cheap meats, some chicken wings, some cleaning supplies, etc... and that was at the Commissary.  I stopped at Maceys, and bought a gallon of milk, two pounds of butter, a package of short ribs, two bags of french fries, a dozen and a half eggs, a very cheap cut of beef for some beans I'm making this afternoon, a cheap polska keilbasa, again for the beans, and ten pounds of sugar. That came to thirty-two dollars just by itself.

When I got home from the Commissary I separated things into two piles:  Things I needed and things I could have lived without.  The could have lived without pile came to just under $26.

I don't see how folks are making it.

Anyway, that's not the point of today's blog, just my empathy for people.  Miss June usually does the grocery shopping.  I've been somewhat insulated from the sticker shock.

Today's title is about cooking.  Must be fall because I'm getting my cook on this afternoon.  I have a concoction of baked beans in the bean pot.  A buddy of mine at work makes the best beans and he puts steak and sausage in them.  I'm kind of trying a variation of these beans today.  They're in the oven now.

Chicken wings are going to be for dinner.  I was hoping to find the Redskins preseason game on TV but no such luck tonight.  Oh well, there's always SportsCenter for the highlights.  Dinner will still be dinner, though.

Tomorrow we're having kebabs.  I have the coolest little BBQ to do kebabs on.  I have to make sure the little motor still works though.  That won't take much time at all.  It has a little rotisserie that's driven by a motor that works on a "D" cell battery.  I have a lawn to mow first thing in the morning but after that, I'll start fussing with the house and the bbq, etc..

Today's about cooking, though, and all weekend will probably be the same way.  My neighbor has an apple tree that we share.  They're not good keeper apples and a little on the tart side but I'm going to try my hand at apple butter with them.  We have the jars and I hate to see them go to waste.  Same with the apricots.  They're ripe and they're going to turn into jam later on this evening.  I might even dehydrate some overnight.  I like dehydrated apricots for a snack and they're like bomb shelter food.

It's nice to feel a little better.  I was under the weather for a few days this week but feel so much better today, so it's time to get my cook on!

If you want some apricots, please feel free to drop by the house and pick all you want.

Waste not, want not!
