My next job
I want to be an apologist. It's someone who uses facts to make a case for or against something. It's a lot like being an attorney.
The reason I do is because I always did like a good argument. I just had one with my pussycat. He did not get the better of me. I have no scratches and he didn't get whupped. He was just mad. I won the argument by just petting him and not letting him do what he wanted to.
He'll get over it.
Anyway, I was reading some stuff on Facebook and a friend of mine (the same guy with the Christmas tree) posted something about gay marriage and why would the State spend good money to defend the ban. On this one I had to respectfully disagree with his position. We had an election and we said no. I voted in the negative on this one.
Here's why:
When Wendi and I were living together in sin, we were penalized for that. Because we were single, there were rights she didn't have. We paid much more in taxes because of the choice we made to live together. Lots of choices have consequences.
We talk about rights in this country but often not responsibility. Our whole form of Government is based on the idea that we have a Creator. Sorry, folks, but it's right there before you get to the part about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Creator! Big C Creator. And as such, our Creator had rules about things... I think it's kind of implied that said Creator made up some rules about His creation.
And in deference of the created to the Creator, I don't necessarily think it's bad or wrong to point this out.
Here's another thing that cracked me up today. Said friend also posted a thing about being upset that someone would be upset at him for not liking their religion. I would not be among those upset. The Bible doesn't tell me to go and force people to believe it. Jesus said to go and make disciples. Part of making disciples is a willingness of the person to BE discipled. I can't force people to accept the Good News, but I can spread it.
Which is what I'm supposed to do.
You'll notice that when I was speaking to Xander the other day, I didn't tell him I expected him to believe everything in Colossians. What I said was I wanted him to see for himself what the book said. I can read it or talk about it with him, but only he can make the choice to accept the Truth.
When I clicked the link to the meme, it took me to an atheist website. One of the things I read just absolutely made me laugh. I'm still laughing about it. It was some guy trying to explain how evolution should be explained to Creationists.
Apparently there's only a small bit of chance. The rest of it, the author of the post was pointing out, could only be explained by "natural selection". Oh, is that what we're calling it now? The thing that absolutely made me laugh the most was the point that natural selection took the chaos out of the whole evolution thing. It's the game changer. It's the great neutralizer. It's natural selection.
What it is, friends, is a lame excuse to try and say that there is thing that guides the universe in which we live, which orders chaos and isn't random chance, but isn't God.
It's crap.
Evolution is a theory. Nobody can prove it. If you'd like to try, here's all you have to do. Go into a room and make something from absolutely nothing. That's evolution. This all just kind of happened and then we crawled out of the ooze and bing, bang, boom, we're not monkeys anymore. We're walking upright and dragging chicks around by their hair. Then entirely by accident, we figured out fire and the wheel. Or was that evolution? I forget.
Look, we're not the same people we once were. We're taller. We weigh more. We live longer. We're by far smarter. We're so smart we're messing with things we shouldn't. But if you take a read in the Bible we haven't changed all that much. Science has a place in our world. If God gives talents, He surely gives them to scientists. If I get sick, I have every faith in the world that God can heal me. I also trust that God gave that doctor I'm seeing some talents. Why would I think God doesn't unlock certain things about His universe when it pleases Him to do so? Sometimes I think we're too smart for our own good.
And it's in that school of thought I'm writing this tonight because I think that's where a lot of us are (and where I used to be). Too smart for my own good.
It's late and I'm tired but I'm gonna hang on to this one for a while. It's time we talked about why we think we know more than God.
