Resources
If you're having troubles in your marriage, here are some helpful resources:
The Bible. It talks about everything from what marriage is to how to raise children. The book of Proverbs is an excellent source of knowledge that still applies to this day. The Psalms are of great comfort. My favorite these days is Psalm 39, and Psalm 119.
Your pastor and your church: If you don't have one, or a church, may I suggest trying one or two until you find one that fits. If you're not ready for church, find a Christian counselor. Why a Christian counselor? Because that person is trained to deal with your problems and can offer the foundation of a belief in God and Jesus Christ that will help not only heal your marriage, but your very life.
A therapist: Therapy is sometimes necessary. I needed it. I can share with you by e-mail the name of mine.
Books: Two come to mind. "Getting the Love You Want", by Harville Hendrix; and "After the Affair" by Janis Springs. If your library doesn't have either and you can't afford to purchase these books, I'll loan you mine. I can tell you that "After the Affair", had I read it when I was told about it, would have saved my marriage from page one!
Radio/Internet: If you're contemplating divorce, may I suggest divorcecare.org? There are a lot of resources there and their 365 days of healing e-mails are full of wisdom. They've made a huge difference in my life by helping me understand some things I didn't. The offer a support group, too. The Bible Broadcasting Network offers inspirational programming that can help the family. They're at 95.5 fm in Ogden.
Multimedia: The Moody Church in Chicago offers a wide range of sermons and programs that can help you and your family. For a gift of any size, they're willing to send you programs. Their pastor is an incredible speaker. You can hear him on BBN as well.
Seminars: Make a date with your wife and attend a marriage seminar. Then USE what you learn. Make that commitment to your relationship!
Friends, but only for support. Not the best source of advice. They bring their baggage into helping you. You have plenty of your own. Talk to your friends but tell them you just need a sympathetic ear. Help can come from people that have been trained to help you.
The bottom line is this. If you have problems, don't let pride get in the way of getting help! Fight FOR your marriage! You loved each other once. Fix what's stopping from loving each other still. These things can help!
BTW, If you'd care to share or add to that list, comments are open. Please do.
