Follow Me
Hi Gang. Welcome to a snowy Monday morning edition of the blog. Hope everyone had a good weekend. How 'bout them Seahawks? Wouldn't it be funny if a team with a losing regular season record (7-9) made it to the Super Bowl?
Unfortunately, I missed Saturday's playoff games because I had to work. Too bad about the Colts. The next time the Jets play the Colts ought to be really interesting.
Well, today's blog is about following. It's something I learned at an early age in the military. To be a good leader, you first have to learn to be a follower. This week's theme seems to be about trusting in, and following Christ. I'd like to share with you my pastor's blog entry about Jesus being Lord over our lives. It's an important message .
I mentioned this last week. I told you I made a conscious decision to follow the Lord and I pretty much let Him take me through life these days. Instead of my trying to tell Him where I want to go, as I was still doing last summer and fall, I let Him show me the way. When I let go of the "reins", some really good things started happening in my life.
For one, I've learned that when I have questions or difficulties, there are answers. Someone asked me to do something for them yesterday and I wasn't quite sure how to go about it. I asked for a little bit of guidance on the matter and found the answer I needed in the Bible. I didn't look it up in the concordance , actually I didn't even think to look it up in the concordance, to tell the truth. I just kind of stumbled over it by accident and it was the perfect answer to my problem.
Following was hard at first because I thought I knew what was best for me. I was making decisions based on the worldly experiences I've had in my life. It wasn't from a lack of faith in Jesus, but a lack of understanding of the point Pastor Karl makes in his blog coupled with a lack of any real spiritual experiences in my life. Time has taken care of that. I've had the chance to see what God can do in my life when I let him, so I just trust in, and follow the Lord.
In return, God has given me three precious gifts. The first one is a good dose of wisdom. Smart is one thing... wise, well, I've learned is quite another. As I follow, I gain in wisdom because I pay more attention to the things that happen around me, not just to me. I've gained a lot of insight and wisdom from reading the Bible each day as well.
The second gift God has seen fit to bestow on me is patience. I have to tell you this is one thing I've had a problem with my whole life. I've always been kind of a "right now" kind of guy and never looked ahead to the future. Not anymore. I understand that my timetable is not God's timetable and that's been hard to get used to. I'm really much better at being patient than I ever have been in my life.
The third thing that the Lord has seen fit to bless me with is grace. It's by His grace that I'm becoming the man I am these days, and truly I can't even find the words to explain what a blessing His grace has been in my life.
It's this feeling of grace that allows me to accept that the Lord will take me in life where He wants me to go. I trust Him with everything and I don't make too many decisions these days without asking Him for guidance. I trust He will keep me safe and show me the way He wants me to go. If I deviate from that path, I know something will happen that will put me back on course. I know all too well what will happen if I try to defy His perfect will again. Those lessons have been learned the hard way.
Those are but three of the wonderful things the Lord does for me each and every day. God's love is in my heart; in my very soul these days and that feeling of joy I have each day, I simply can't find the words to explain. Each day is a blessing in my life.
OK, I know that's not what you wanted to read today. But I had to tell you those stories to tell you this one: I'm exuberant! For those of you that don't understand how that's possible, here's John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
You see, my friends, I'm just following Him.
