kitchen gadgets
I like to cook and I like going to yard sales because you never know what you're going to find. Because of these two things, the Mrs. and I over the years collected quite a number of gadgets.
I made some chicken Tava last night. I brought the Tava bowls back from Turkey. To make the Tava I used another gadget, the food processor. I love this gadget because it'll destroy an onion in 15 seconds. I hate chopping onions. I used it to puree' some red peppers for the Tava too.
Another gadget that made my life simple is a rice steamer. This is the ONLY way to cook rice. I can't do it on a stove without it coming out like a big, gloppy mess. I steamed some jasmine rice to go with the tava and it wasn't as good as what you get in Turkey, but it was close. It turned out pretty well.
The immigrant was gathering up all the pieces of our various gadgets today. That's when she noticed one of my gadgets needed a new gadget. I told her we could live without it, because we had another gadget, a Mouli-Julienne from the 70's the would do the same thing. I took this out of the cupboard for the first time and this gadget is missing a key gadget that makes it work; the handle the blade attaches to.
I have some raisin bread in my bread gadget. I like this gadget because I only have to use one gadget to make bread instead of a mixer and the oven. One pan, one gadget, 4 hours, and it's bread. I can live with this gadget.
I have a coffee gadget I just simply love. Every cup is fresh brewed. My regular coffee pot gadget doesn't work well anymore. But it keeps coffee hot forever because it's a thermal decanter coffee gadget. You just have to push the brew button a few times to get the full pot done. At least it works. When I use the big pot, I have a gadget to grind the beans for a pot. I also have a coffee grinder like you'd see in the store that grinds by the POUND. (I'll make you a good deal on this item!)
My oven is a gadget that cleans itself. I spilled a little of the Tava in the oven and noticed the oven needed some love. I pushed a button and viola' this morning I had a pretty clean oven and a small pile of ashes. The oven will steam clean itself but I didn't take the time to read the directions on how to make this part of the gadget work.
I have a gadget that peels apples. This little gadget became one of my favorites once I learned how to take the peel off the apple without taking half of the apple with it. I can peel an apple with it in under 30 seconds.
My two favorite gadgets though, are two I don't use much but wouldn't part with. The first one is my Kitchenaid mixer. The thing has a PTO shaft on the front of it so you can hook up all kinds of gadgets to it. I only have the meat grinder & sausage stuffer gadget right now, but someday, I'll have the pasta making gadgets. My other favorite gadget is my Cabela's Jerkey Blaster. It's essentially a caulk gun for ground up meat!
My microwave is a cool gadget itself. The turntable moves back and forth and also turns. It has a feature to soften a stick of butter. It knows when the baked potatoes are done. It doubles as a stove vent and lights up the stove. It doesn't burn the popcorn. I have a spare one I can make you a really good deal on, as well (it's a long story).
I do have one too many of one gadget, though. I found my elusive cookie press yesterday, so now I have two A cookie press is like a caulk gun for cookies.
Maybe that's why I like to cook so much. I get to play with all these cool little gadgets.
