Lots of yard just means lots of yard work

I'm officially tired.  I woke up at five for no particular reason this morning.  I guess it was just the thing to do.  But on a Saturday?  Really?

I worked my fat little touche off today but it felt good.  It really did.  I accomplished stuff but this yard is almost too many for just one person to handle.  Being sick this week didn't help out, either.  But progress is being made and tomorrow, first on the priority list is starting the five thousand gallon fill.  The pool is ready to be filled up.  Then I can put my things away that I used to clean the pool and get to work in earnest on the next project which is the back 40.

I got quite a bit of it tilled up today.  Some of it, June has already planted.  Raspberries are bound and determined that they're gonna take back their part of the garden.  I found two more that have popped up since I thinned out the weeds there a couple of weeks ago.  Wanna know what else grows really well?

Weeds.  And grass that you don't want growing where it is.  Both are doing well here at Lark Circle.  Or shall I say, were?  I spent 4 hours with my weed eater back there.  I had to reload the string spool about three times.  I had to re-thread it at least twenty.  I can't afford to buy the pre-wound cartridges that the line strips off of very nicely.  I wind mine by hand and the line doesn't always cooperate.  But with a little help from above, I got the job done.

I don't say that tongue in cheek either.  I have one of them there Ryobi gadgets and it doesn't run very well.  I have to hold the choke with vise grips and the engine only has one speed.  On.  It won't run with the choke off.  I have another one I bought at a yard sale.  It needs a new fuel filter and some new fuel lines.  It does run, though.  When you prime the engine, it starts right up.  The main fuel line is clogged at the fuel filter.  The lawn supply place didn't have a spare today.  They're thinking sometime before next weekend.  I hope so.

The back 40 is a mess and that's my fault because all I did was keep the weeds down last year.  I round-up'd the thing a couple of times, too, but then grass grew when all the weeds died.  It's going to be dug out tomorrow, though.  I'm going to plant just about every inch of the yard that I can.  I want things to grow.  So the fight is on.  I plan on winning.

I found a couple of new things I would like to have for my tractor.  One is a box scraper.  One is a lawn sweeper.  There's even a little front loader scoop.  I'd like to have all three.  I'll settle for just keeping what i have in operable condition.

The garden begins to get planted in earnest tomorrow.  I'm going to try some drip irrigation this year for the tomatoes.  I'm hoping that it'll cut down on the weed seeds.  If not, then it's just going to be good old fashioned irrigation.  That's kind of tough to do because of the slope of the yard, so what I'm contemplating is running pvc pipe down the main furrows and then cutting furrows across and filling them up that way to water things.  I dunno.  I'm just the laborer.  Miss June is the master gardener.

I weeded her peas today.  She'll come home and tell me "Bless your pea pickin' little heart", you watch.

Miss June makes me laugh sometimes.

I have a bit of a mess to clean up around the pool in the morning, then I have to rake up what I cut down tomorrow afternoon.  Then once that is done, I have to break up the soil with the little harrow I have.  After that's done, then I'm going to run the plow through the parts of the ground I haven't tilled just to break up the soil.  I forsee a lot of seat time in the tractor tomorrow.  Once that's done, it'll be time to rake it out one last time, to get the big chunks out.  Fortunately I have a dump cart and a very large pickup truck.  The dump cart is like an oversized wheel barrow.  It's almost a necessity and helps haul stuff from out back to up front without having to drive the truck into the back yard.

I don't figure to be done until Monday sometime, and hopefully we can get the plants planted whenever June has some free time.  I still have to go pick out a few things, like corn, squash, pumpkins, and the like.  I'm planting a lot of that kind of stuff because it'll cover ground.  The more the plants cover the ground, the less weeding I have to do.  You just have to be careful not to plant things too close together so they don't cross-pollenate.  I learned that the hard way.  But I'm excited for a big garden.  I'm looking forward to taking care of it.  I have some motivation I haven't had in a few years, namely it's gonna be cheaper to pick a cucumber than buy one.

We're going to plant the following:  Peas, three kinds of potatoes, corn, tomatoes (celebrity, better boy, and romas), carrots, spinach, lettuce (she plants all different kinds), beets, lots and lots of green beans, pumpkins, zucchini, banana squash, maybe some butternut squash, and whatever else Miss June has up her sleeve.

Well, gang, I gotta go rinse off the topsoil and then going to heat up some leftovers.  I wanted chinese but Mr. Budget said "nope".  And because I don't have nearly enough to do, after the garden is in, I'm going to rebuild the engine on the tiller!  Between e-bay and other places on the internet, as long as I don't need a block, I should be OK to get this done.  It all depends on how much damage was done when the piston connecting rod broke.  It made a really cool noise when it happened.

Hope you had a blessed day and y'all up this way are invited to church.  Then if you'd feel so inclined, you can come over and help me with the back 40.

Blessings,

Coop
