new parts for old stuff

I have old stuff.  My lawn tractor is 30 years old this year.  Runs great, but it has a few things that needed fixing, like the varidrive lever that fell off when I was plowing the other day.  Sears is hit and miss on whether or not they have the stuff I need.  They didn't, so I took the lever to Lowes and found hardware that would work.  Got out for less than $10 and that included the new hardware I needed for the mower deck.

My boat is the same way.  It doesn't get used much anymore, mostly because I have trust issues with the motor and trailer.  I had a bad experience a year ago this coming weekend that cost me a lot of money I didn't have and I never so much as put the boat in the water.  The bearings on the trailer went out.  They've since been changed and I towed it home from Green River with no incident.  I'd like to get rid of it but I can't sell it right now.  But what I can do is keep it from leaking gear oil all over my driveway.

The motor on Dollar is a 1976 Tohatsu outboard.  It runs, when I can keep the carburetor clean.  They don't make a carb for this motor anymore.  If they did, I'd have purchased a new one a long time ago.  Other than the carb, the motor runs just fine.  I've had to rebuild the carb out on the lake before.  Ask my kids about that little adventure.  Three of them and me in the boat, with the back end apart and trying not to drop the carb into the lake.

There are times I'd like to drop the whole motor into the lake, but that's a story for another year.

I was killing some time on the internet, looking at boat parts, and found everything I needed to put this thing back to right, and it was all pretty cheap.  I know cheap adds up, but I can do this affordably, even on my tight budget, so the parts are on their way.

It's hard to find stuff like this, but on the internet I found a shop that carried them for affordable prices.  Most of the things I need are rubber seals, rubber grommets, and O-rings.  Thirty-five years is a lot to ask out of an oil seal, so it's getting new ones, even if it's just to keep the driveway from becoming an oily mess.  I don't dare not put oil in the thing and gear lube smells so bad!

They'll be here next week and that will give me something else to tinker with.  Maybe I'll be able to get it going and be able to do some fishing later on this summer.  Who knows?

Well, that's all from my take the night off to take care of an important matter which wasn't as big a deal as I thought it was going to be (at least for now, anyway!)
